Admission | Why SAAS?
Overview

Seattle Academy provides a broad education in academics, art, athletics, and community involvement.  We have a strong sense of community at SAAS and we believe education requires partnerships between students, parents, teachers, and staff.

Our students learn to leave their comfort zones and embrace new challenges. We have built a strong foundation of support to help students dive into activities that have intrigued and maybe intimidated them in the past.

Our faculty and staff bring diverse, rich life experience—often from fields entirely separate from teaching—to the classroom as mentors and teachers. They have decades of teaching experience on top of careers as computer programmers, translators, esteemed artists, actors, and writers.

Each student is assigned an advisor who helps with social, academic, and extracurricular activities.  In addition to three school counselors, Seattle Academy has an award-winning department of learning specialists to assist teachers and students.

Admission | Why SAAS?
Culture of Performance

Central to a Seattle Academy education is the Culture of Performance. Students are asked to demonstrate over and over – often reaching for professional standards – what they are learning. Students discover the thrill of achievement and the lessons of failure, and they come to understand that the greater the risk, the greater the reward.

Meeting the challenge to integrate and apply skills and knowledge – whether in the classroom, on the athletic field, or on the stage – expands personal horizons and fosters greater self-esteem, confidence, and maturity. For example, a junior biology student may conceive, develop, and orally defend a scientific hypothesis to a jury of parents or experts in the field. In doing so, that student puts to use knowledge learned in a full range of his or her classes: Knowledge from textbooks and the laboratory, creative thinking encouraged in the art studio, presentation skills enlivened on the stage, and the courage to take risks developed on the athletic field or on a wilderness trip. This integration and performance happens over and over, in all disciplines and all grades.

The Culture of Performance has been articulated as a key component of Seattle Academy’s curriculum and is consistent with developmental and cognitive theories. The Culture of Performance is embedded throughout the program and is the central pathway to the demonstration of excellence in what Seattle Academy students learn and come to understand. Our alumni cite the Culture of Performance as the major factor in their success in college and in the workforce.
